‘Book Time to Read to your Kids’
A new report claims that despite millions of pounds of Government investment, reading levels among children have hardly moved over the past seven years.
Here Brighton author Polly Dunbar argues that it’s down to parents to take responsibility and offers tips on how to get children interested in books.
I know everyone looks to schools to help their children learn to read.
But in my opinion it’s the parents who should take the lead.
Many mums and dads just don’t know how to read to their kids - as a children’s author I read to children all the time, so maybe I can help parents understand more about the joy of sharing a book with their little ones.
Reading for children above all else should be fun, otherwise, being children, they just won’t listen.
It is hugely important for parents to take the time to sit with their child and a picture book. Not only does it develop their visual awareness and reading skills, it is an opportunity for parent and child to bond.
Children have huge imaginations, their eyes are still wide open and they really believe in stories. So sharing one is a rewarding, funny and sometimes magical experience…
