Dads Double Power of Parent Involvement

A dad told me about signing up to volunteer at his child’s school. A week later the first e-mail came, opening with, “Dear Ladies.” He was amused, but not deterred. He knew about the research that shows parent involvement has a significant effect on student achievement. He wanted to show his children that education is priority one - regardless of gender.

Twenty-first century schools understand the importance of parent involvement and many like those in the Washington and Isaac elementary districts are taking steps to give a little extra encouragement for the other half - our dads!

Isaac Elementary Superintendent Kent Scribner began Dedicated Active Dads in Schools (DADS) to reach fathers across the district.

“DADS operates as a cadre of fathers at schools,” Scribner said. “They plan fun and inviting ways for fathers to get involved in school activities and help their sons and daughters succeed.”

Carlos Meza, president of the DADS club at Lela Alston Elementary, got involved when his kids were in preschool.

“Before DADS you would never see fathers at school,” Meza said. “Now fathers know it’s OK to get involved at school and help at home. Our dads are beginning to know they can help their kids succeed.” …
