Expand Parental Leave, not Day Care

New early brain research tells us that optimal child development results from consistent, loving interaction with a primary caregiver,” says Eugene psychologist Charlotte Peterson. “This supports the idea of a parent staying home with children for the first three years as long as there’s a positive attachment.

“There is an almost complete disconnect between science and politics on the child care question. We should be expanding parental leave, not infant day care.”
One reason dissenting voices are silenced is that in our country we believe any study critical of full-time day care will make employed parents feel guilty…

“One of the interesting things about the field is that different researchers put different spins on their own data. They don’t agree among themselves. It’s a topic that engenders emotion in both researchers and reporters. It’s not played straight. It always pays to do your own independent research.”
